2nd/3rd Grade Teacher

Daylen Russell is a born and bred New Yorker with a soft spot for the Pacific Northwest. This is their 3rd year teaching 2/3 at the Emerson School. They first joined Emerson as a student teacher in 2019 and have been in love with the community ever since! In 2011, Daylen graduated from Sarah Lawrence College where they studied Performing Arts. Following their graduation, they worked as a Teaching Artist for 5 years, teaching music and theater to Elementary students in New York City. After moving to Portland 4 years ago, Daylen worked as an Assistant Teacher at a public Montessori charter school in North East Portland while obtaining their Masters degree and teaching license. Daylen believes that education has the potential to be a liberating and transformative experience for children and that the Project Approach, paired with Positive Discipline, creates an environment where this potential can be realized in exciting and deeply enriching ways. When outside the classroom they enjoy spending time with their dog Rufus, riding their bike and making music.
